The Ultimate Cozy Classic: How To Make Authentic Homemade Lasagna From Scratch
There are few things in this world that feel as comforting as pulling a bubbling, golden-brown dish of homemade lasagna out of the oven. It’s the kind of meal that fills the whole house with the most incredible aroma—tomatoes, garlic, basil, and melted cheese. Whether you’re cooking for a Sunday family dinner, a special date night, or just meal-prepping for a busy week, this lasagna recipe is the one you’ll come back to time and time again. It’s rich, hearty, and layered with love (and a whole lot of cheese). So grab your apron, pour yourself a glass of wine, and let’s build something beautiful together.
Ingredients
- 12 lasagna noodles (oven-ready or boiled to al dente)
- 1 lb (450g) ground beef (or a mix of beef and Italian sausage)
- 1 medium onion, finely diced
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 24 oz (680g) marinara or crushed tomato sauce
- 2 tbsp tomato paste
- 1 tsp dried oregano
- 1 tsp dried basil
- Salt and black pepper to taste
- 15 oz (425g) ricotta cheese
- 1 large egg
- 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 3 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- Fresh basil leaves for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- In a large skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef with the diced onion until no pink remains. Add the garlic and cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
- Stir in the marinara sauce, tomato paste, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper. Simmer on low for 15–20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- In a medium bowl, combine the ricotta, egg, and Parmesan cheese. Mix well and season with a pinch of salt and pepper.
- Spread a thin layer of meat sauce on the bottom of a 9x13-inch baking dish. Layer 4 noodles, then half of the ricotta mixture, a third of the mozzarella, and a third of the meat sauce. Repeat the layers once more.
- Finish with a final layer of noodles, remaining meat sauce, and the rest of the mozzarella cheese.
- Cover with foil and bake for 25 minutes. Remove the foil and bake another 20–25 minutes until the cheese is bubbly and golden.
- Let the lasagna rest for 10–15 minutes before slicing. Garnish with fresh basil and serve warm.
Chef’s Notes & Tips
- Rest is best: Letting the lasagna rest before slicing helps it hold its shape and makes serving much cleaner.
- No-boil noodles: If using oven-ready noodles, add an extra 1/2 cup of water to your sauce to ensure they cook through.
- Make ahead: Assemble the lasagna up to 24 hours in advance and refrigerate. Add 10 extra minutes to the covered baking time.
- Cheese love: For an extra cheesy top, sprinkle a little extra mozzarella and Parmesan right before the final uncovered bake.
I hope this lasagna becomes a beloved staple in your kitchen just like it is in mine. There’s something magical about a dish that brings people together around the table, and this one does it beautifully. If you give it a try, I’d love to hear how it turned out—drop a comment or share a photo with your friends and family. Happy cooking, and enjoy every cheesy, saucy bite!
